Ashington is a former colliery town in Northumberland, England, lying a short distance inland from the North Sea and roughly 15–20 miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne; the River Wansbeck runs close by and the town sits in what was once the heart of the local coalfield. Its grid‑like streets reflect its growth as a planned mining community in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The mining past remains visible in museums and parks on the old pit sites, most notably at Woodhorn, where exhibitions celebrate the “Pitmen Painters” and local industrial history. Since the pits closed Ashington has been through waves of regeneration, with manufacturing, logistics and retail replacing many mining jobs, yet it retains a strong community identity and a sporting tradition that produced famous footballers such as Jackie Milburn and Sir Bobby Charlton.
