Gotham is a ward centred on the small village in the borough of Rushcliffe, Nottinghamshire, a few miles to the south of Nottingham. It retains a compact historic core with a medieval church, listed cottages and a village green, and is famous for the old folktales of the "wise men of Gotham", a reputation that was later borrowed by Washington Irving when he nicknamed New York "Gotham".
Today the area mixes traditional agriculture and small local enterprises with a significant commuter population who work in Nottingham and beyond. Community life is focused on the village hall, pub and local events, and much of the ward is valued for its conservation interest and attractive rural character rather than heavy industry or commercial development.
