Royton is a former mill town in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, in Greater Manchester, sitting on the lower slopes of the Pennines and overlooking the valley of the River Irk. Historically part of Lancashire, it expanded rapidly in the 19th century as cotton mills and associated industries transformed a largely rural parish into a dense industrial community, and remnants of that era - mill buildings, terraced streets and the pattern of streets and lanes - still shape the town.
Today Royton is largely residential, with light industry and local shops serving a mixed, working‑class population; many people commute into Oldham and Manchester. There’s a strong local identity expressed through sports clubs, community groups and civic events, and its position close to the Pennine hills gives easy access to countryside walks while keeping urban amenities within reach.
