Shaw and Crompton is a civil parish on the edge of the borough of Oldham in Greater Manchester, sitting where the terraced mill town meets open moorland. The area grew rapidly in the 19th century around the cotton and textile industries, and you can still see the legacy of Victorian mills and workers’ housing alongside reservoirs, gritstone outcrops and the wide, heathy expanse of Crompton Moor that leads towards the Pennines.
Today it has a mixed local economy of shops, light industry and commuters who travel readily into Manchester thanks to tram and road links, while a strong community life is maintained through parish groups, sports clubs and outdoor recreation on the moors. The combination of industrial heritage and accessible countryside gives the parish a distinct local identity and popular appeal for walkers and families.
