Dinnington is an electoral ward in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, within South Yorkshire, that grew from a modest agricultural settlement into a bustling coal‑mining community in the 20th century. The famous Dinnington Main Colliery was for decades the town’s largest employer and its closure in the late 20th century had a deep economic and social impact, after which the area gradually shifted towards retail, small businesses and commuter living for nearby larger centres.
Today the ward combines a compact town centre and local services with easy access to surrounding countryside, and benefits from good transport links towards Sheffield and other regional hubs. There is an active community life - sports clubs, civic groups and regeneration projects have helped to refresh the high street and housing, while the legacy of mining remains an important part of local identity and history.
