Dinnington is a small former coal‑mining town in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, in South Yorkshire, England, lying close to the Nottinghamshire border and within commuting distance of Sheffield and Worksop. It sits on the edge of the urban sprawl of South Yorkshire but still reads as a distinct settlement with local shops, parks and community facilities.
The town grew rapidly in the early 20th century around Dinnington Main Colliery and much of its character is shaped by that mining heritage - visible in community institutions such as the miners’ welfare, memorials and local clubs. After pit closures in the late 20th century the area has diversified into light industry and a commuter economy, while retaining a strong local identity through sports clubs, annual events and grassroots community organisations.
