North Anston and South Anston are two neighbouring villages on the eastern fringe of Sheffield within the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham. The area is best known for Anston Stones Wood, a dramatic limestone outcrop and designated SSSI that gives the landscape a rugged, almost karst-like character, and the nearby River Ryton and open farmland provide pleasant walks and green buffers to the surrounding towns.
Historically the villages grew around stone quarrying and agriculture, and traces of that industrial past still shape lanes and local architecture, though today they are largely residential commuter communities with primary schools, pubs and active local clubs. There’s a strong local identity centred on community events, countryside access and conservation of the distinctive natural features that make the area popular with walkers and rock enthusiasts.
