West Bromwich sits in the metropolitan borough of Sandwell in the West Midlands of England, forming part of the industrial heartland known as the Black Country. The town grew up around coal, iron and chain-making during the 19th century and is compact and well connected, lying close to Birmingham and major roads and rail links that helped its factories and foundries flourish.
Today West Bromwich mixes pockets of regeneration and retail-most visibly the New Square shopping area-with reminders of its past such as the nearby Sandwell Valley country park and the ruins of Sandwell Priory. It also has a strong local identity through sport and community life, most famously home to West Bromwich Albion whose ground, The Hawthorns, remains a focal point, alongside public services like Sandwell General Hospital and further-education campuses serving a diverse population.
