Sandwell is a compact metropolitan borough in the West Midlands, part of the historic Black Country lying between Birmingham and Wolverhampton. It comprises a string of towns - West Bromwich, Oldbury, Smethwick, Tipton, Wednesbury and Rowley Regis - and is criss-crossed by canals, rail routes and motorways that reflect its industrial past.
Created in 1974 and named after the medieval Sandwell Priory, the borough grew on coal, iron and manufacturing industries and still bears that engineering legacy in its landscapes and street patterns. Deindustrialisation brought regeneration projects and a shift towards retail, services and light industry; culturally the area is often identified with West Bromwich and its football club, West Bromwich Albion, who play at The Hawthorns.
Despite the urban density, Sandwell contains notable green lungs such as Sandwell Valley Country Park with the priory ruins, and a network of community facilities and voluntary groups that reflect a diverse population. Local identity is strong, shaped by industrial heritage, active neighbourhoods and ongoing efforts to balance housing, employment and greener space for future generations.
