Litherland is a ward in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, lying on Merseyside just north of Liverpool and adjacent to Bootle. Historically part of Lancashire, it grew rapidly in the 19th century to house workers for nearby docks and light industry; remnants of that industrial past sit alongside pockets of green space, most notably the reclaimed wetland of Litherland Moss, and it sits within easy reach of Aintree and its famous racecourse.
Today the area is largely residential with local shops, small businesses and active community centres, and is well served by Merseyrail with direct links into the city and towards Southport. Civic life is shaped by grassroots sports clubs and conservation projects on the moss, while ongoing regeneration aims to balance the ward’s working‑class heritage with new economic and social opportunities.
