Bitterley is a small, rural parish in south Shropshire, situated a few miles south‑east of Ludlow. The landscape is a mix of rolling farmland, pockets of ancient woodland and hedged lanes with views towards the Clee Hills, and watercourses such as the River Teme close by; the parish includes a scattering of hamlets and farmsteads rather than a single large village.
The area has a long agricultural history and some local quarrying for the distinctive sandstone used in nearby buildings; notable local features include the country house Bitterley Court and a historic parish church with medieval fabric. Today the community remains small and outward‑looking, with much of its economy tied to farming, forestry and the services and tourist trade centred on Ludlow, while quiet lanes and public footpaths make it popular with walkers.
