Bruton is a compact market town in rural Somerset, tucked into the green Brue valley on the banks of the River Brue. It has a pleasantly historic centre of narrow streets and stone buildings, a medieval parish church and a legacy of market and wool-trade prosperity that gives the town a distinctly old‑English character.
In recent years Bruton has developed a lively cultural and artisan scene – boosted notably by the Hauser & Wirth gallery and sculpture park at Durslade Farm – which draws visitors and has helped diversify the local economy alongside farming and small independent businesses. The town also hosts a long‑established independent school, King’s School, and maintains a sociable community atmosphere with cafés, antiques, galleries and seasonal markets.
