Cheddar in Somerset, England sits at the southern end of the dramatic limestone cliffs of Cheddar Gorge, carved into the Mendip Hills. The gorge is one of Britain’s most spectacular natural features, with show caves such as Gough's Cave where the Mesolithic remains known as “Cheddar Man” were discovered, and a long record of prehistoric and industrial activity linked to the limestone landscape.
Today Cheddar combines a strong tourist economy - drawing walkers, climbers and cavers - with its historic food heritage: Cheddar cheese was traditionally matured in the local caves. Agriculture, hospitality and small-scale food production remain important locally, and features such as the nearby Cheddar Reservoir add wildlife and recreational interest while the village retains a close-knit community feel despite the steady flow of visitors.
