Shipham is a small village on the western flanks of the Mendip Hills in Somerset, set high enough to give sweeping views down to the Somerset Levels and out towards the Bristol Channel. It sits close to the dramatic limestone scenery of Cheddar Gorge and the market town of Axbridge, and lies within the Mendips Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so walking, caving and cycling are popular with residents and visitors alike.
Historically the area drew its livelihood from Mendip mining (notably lead and related minerals) and from hill farming, and today the village still shows its industrial and agricultural past in stone cottages and bridleways while supporting a small, active community through local events, a village hall and a pub. Tourism and outdoor recreation now play a significant economic role, but Shipham keeps a quiet, rural character and a strong sense of local identity.
