The Old Kent Road ward sits in the east of the London borough of Southwark, following a stretch of the ancient Roman route out of London towards Canterbury and Dover. Historically a corridor of coaching inns, markets and later factories, the road still shows its working‑class past in Victorian terraces, light industrial yards and the odd surviving landmark - it was even immortalised as one of the original properties on the Monopoly board.
Today the ward is a densely populated, multicultural part of inner London with social housing, independent shops and pockets of small industry, and it is the focus of a major regeneration masterplan promising new homes, retail and improved transport links including the proposed Bakerloo line extension. That mix of long‑standing communities and fresh investment makes the area economically dynamic but also the subject of lively local debate about gentrification and the future character of places between Elephant and Castle and Bermondsey.
