Southwark

London borough in England

Coordinates:51.47, -0.07
OS grid ref:TQ 34 75

Southwark sits immediately south of the River Thames in central London, stretching from the riverfront opposite the City of London down through neighbourhoods such as Bermondsey, Peckham and Camberwell. Its riverside is punctuated by well-known cultural landmarks like Borough Market, Shakespeare's Globe and the Tate Modern, with major transport hubs at London Bridge linking the borough to the rest of the capital.

Historically the area was a focus for trade and entertainment - medieval inns, theatres and the infamous Clink prison are part of its story - and that layered past is visible in narrow streets, churches and surviving historic buildings. Southwark Cathedral and riverside warehouses sit alongside contemporary theatres, galleries and music venues, giving the borough a lively cultural mix that attracts both visitors and neighbourhood communities.

Economically it combines tourism, creative industries and office development with a strong local retail and hospitality sector; regeneration around London Bridge and The Shard has brought new jobs and housing. At the same time longstanding social housing estates and community projects underline persistent issues of affordability and inequality, so the borough remains both dynamically changing and socially diverse.
