Surrey Docks is an electoral ward in the London Borough of Southwark, sitting on the Rotherhithe peninsula and centred around the legacy of the old Surrey Commercial Docks. The area is now dominated by the rebuilt waterfront at Canada Water and the Surrey Quays developments, with good transport links via Canada Water station to the Jubilee line and the London Overground, making it well connected to central London and the wider Docklands.
Historically a working-docks neighbourhood, the ward still retains reminders of that past in features such as Greenland Dock and the Russia Dock woodland, which provide surprising pockets of wildlife, watersports and riverside walks. It’s a socially mixed area with a combination of council estates, newer private flats and retail hubs; decades of regeneration have brought new jobs and amenities while also changing the local character, so debates about gentrification and community identity remain part of everyday life.
