Madeley, in the borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire, England, is a compact, semi-rural village set on the fringes of the North Staffordshire conurbation. It sits within easy commuting distance of Stoke-on-Trent and the national road network, but retains a countryside feel with footpaths, older cottages and a modest village centre rather than urban sprawl.
Like many settlements in the area it has historic ties to coal mining and small-scale industry associated with North Staffordshire, yet today the local economy mixes agriculture, small businesses and commuter households. The community is centred on village amenities such as the hall and pubs and there are a few listed buildings and lanes that reflect its longer rural past; it’s also worth noting this Madeley is distinct from the better-known Telford/Shropshire namesake.
