The borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme sits in north‑west Staffordshire, immediately west of the city of Stoke-on-Trent. It combines a historic market town core with surrounding suburbs, villages and greenbelt countryside, giving a mix of urban and semi‑rural character across the district.
Historically the town grew up around a medieval castle - the “new castle” by the Lyme - and a long‑running market tradition. While the neighbouring Potteries are better known for ceramics, Newcastle-under-Lyme has its own civic architecture, local festivals and cultural life, with a number of listed buildings and country houses in the borough.
Today the local economy blends education, retail, light industry and public services, with Keele University a major local employer and provider of cultural activity. Good road and rail links tie the area into the wider M6 corridor and the Potteries, so the borough functions both as a commuter base and as a centre for independent shops, markets and community organisations.
