Ingleby Barwick is a large residential suburb in the borough of Stockton-on-Tees, in ceremonial North Yorkshire. Built largely from the 1970s onwards on former farmland, it sits on the south bank of the River Tees with views across the Tees valley; the place name combines Old Norse and Old English roots - Ingleby meaning "farmstead of the English" and Barwick implying a barley farm - though the substantial housing estate is a relatively modern development.
Today Ingleby Barwick is a predominantly family-oriented commuter suburb with good road links to the A19 and wider Teesside, offering schools, shops, leisure facilities, parks and a golf course. Often described during its expansion as one of the largest private housing estates in Europe, it retains a strong community identity with active residents' groups and plenty of green space, making it popular for people working in nearby towns and industrial areas.
