Lavenham is a famously well‑preserved medieval village in the district of Babergh, in the county of Suffolk, England. Set on a gently sloping site amid the arable countryside of east Suffolk, it is characterised by narrow, winding streets and an extraordinary concentration of timber‑framed, crooked merchant houses and other historic buildings.
The village grew rich on the 15th–16th century wool and cloth trade, and that wealth is visible in features such as the imposing perpendicular church and the old guildhall; the later decline of the cloth industry helped to freeze much of the town’s medieval character. Today Lavenham has a largely heritage‑led economy, with independent shops, galleries, tearooms and visitor accommodation, and a strong local interest in conservation and community events that celebrate its history.
