Witham is a market town in the district of Braintree, Essex, lying on the banks of the River Brain roughly midway between Chelmsford and Colchester. It grew around a medieval market and expanded significantly in the 19th century when the Great Eastern railway arrived, making it a popular commuter base with regular trains into London.
The town retains historic touches, from the parish church of St Nicolas to the 13th‑century barns at nearby Cressing Temple, but today its economy mixes local shops, light industry and commuter households. Community life is active with fairs, sports clubs and easy access to the surrounding Essex countryside and riverside walks.
