Bungay is a small historic market town in East Suffolk, Suffolk, England, set beside the River Waveney close to the border with Norfolk and within easy reach of The Broads. The compact centre is notable for the ruins of Bungay Castle, the atmospheric presence of St Mary's Church and a number of timber‑framed buildings and narrow streets that give a strong medieval character.
Traditionally a market and trade hub, Bungay now mixes independent shops, antiques dealers and a lively local food and arts scene – including community theatre at the Fisher Theatre and a small local museum. It also has a famous local legend, the Black Dog of Bungay, which feeds into the town’s cultural identity, while the river and surrounding countryside make it popular with walkers, boaters and visitors looking for a quieter Suffolk experience.
