Situated on the Suffolk coast in East Suffolk, Southwold sits at the mouth of the River Blyth facing the North Sea. The town is instantly recognisable for its sand-and-shingle beaches, colourful beach huts, the traditional Southwold Pier and the distinctive 19th-century Southwold Lighthouse that still watches over the estuary.
Southwold has a well-preserved townscape of Georgian and Regency buildings and a strong independent streak, with cafés, galleries and shops alongside an active lifeboat. The locally based Adnams brewery is a notable employer and contributor to the local economy, which also relies on fishing and seasonal tourism; the place attracts artists and weekend visitors from London and beyond, giving it a lively cultural feel while retaining a small-town Suffolk character.
