The town of Sutton sits in the south of London, historically part of Surrey, and acts as the commercial and administrative heart of the local borough. It’s a suburban centre with good rail and road links into central London, and is flanked by neighbourhoods such as Cheam, Carshalton and Wallington.
The centre combines a lively shopping high street and modern retail areas with cultural venues like the Secombe Theatre and community arts spaces. There are significant healthcare and research employers in the area, including the Royal Marsden Hospital, while local independent cafés, restaurants and small businesses give the town a mixed and resilient economy.
Green space is a strong feature here: Nonsuch Park recalls the vanished Nonsuch Palace and is popular with families and walkers, while numerous conservation areas preserve Victorian and Edwardian architecture. Socially it’s known as a largely suburban, family-friendly place with active community groups, regular markets and festivals and a commuter population that nonetheless retains a distinct local identity.
