East Tilbury is a riverside ward in the borough of Thurrock, in Essex, sitting on the north bank of the River Thames. It occupies a mix of low‑lying marshland and post‑industrial riverfront close to the Port of Tilbury, and includes the 19th‑century defensive work Coalhouse Fort, which gives the area a distinctive military edge with views across to London.
The ward is best known for the interwar Bata estate, a company town of modernist houses and social buildings put up by the Bata shoe company, now largely recognised as heritage and protected by a conservation area. Today it feels like a residential and commuter community with pockets of regeneration, local shops and active volunteer groups who help look after the fort, the riverside and the surviving Bata architecture.
