Trafford

Metropolitan district in England

Coordinates:53.42, -2.35
OS grid ref:SJ 76 91

Trafford is a metropolitan borough in Greater Manchester, immediately south‑west of Manchester city centre. It contains a collection of towns and suburbs including Altrincham, Sale, Stretford, Urmston, Timperley and Partington, and is bisected by the Manchester Ship Canal and the River Mersey. The borough combines commuter suburbs with major transport and logistics assets - notably Trafford Park, one of the earliest large industrial estates, and strong road and tram links into the conurbation.

Trafford mixes prosperous residential areas and lively town centres (the regenerated market and food scene in Altrincham is a frequent highlight) with large retail and leisure draws such as the Trafford Centre. It is also famous for sport: Old Trafford is a nationally recognised landmark, and the borough’s nineteenth‑ and twentieth‑century industrial and transport history has left a distinct social and economic character that blends industry, commerce and suburban living.
