Airedale and Ferry Fryston is a ward in the metropolitan borough of Wakefield, in West Yorkshire, occupying low-lying ground in the Aire valley around the River Aire. It mixes former industrial and mining settlements with suburban streets and stretches of reclaimed green space, giving a landscape of parks, community allotments and winding green corridors amid housing estates.
Its character has been shaped by coal-mining history and the social and economic shifts since pit closures, with local regeneration projects, community groups and sports clubs playing a strong role. The area contains pockets of social and economic challenge alongside quieter residential neighbourhoods, and good road and rail links make commuting to nearby centres such as Wakefield and Leeds common for many residents.
