Normanton is a town and civil parish in the City of Wakefield, West Yorkshire, lying on the banks of the River Calder and close to towns such as Castleford and Leeds. It occupies a practical spot in the region with good road and rail connections into the West Yorkshire urban area, and its riverside and towpath routes offer pleasant stretches for walking and cycling.
Historically the town grew around coal mining and the railways - its name itself reflects early Norse influence, meaning a Norseman’s settlement - and those industries shaped much of the local architecture and community.
