Ossett is a market town in the City of Wakefield district of West Yorkshire, England, historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. It sits on higher ground above the nearby Calder Valley and is conveniently positioned between larger centres such as Wakefield and Dewsbury, with good road links towards the M1, Leeds and Sheffield.
The town grew in the 19th century on coal mining and the woollen textile trade, leaving a legacy of Victorian terraces and former mill buildings; more recently the local economy has diversified into light industry, retail and independent breweries, while retaining an active community life with sports clubs, local festivals and a small-town character popular with commuters and families.
