Arun is a local government district on the south coast of West Sussex in England, taking its name from the tidal River Arun. The area stretches from the mouth of the river along shingle and sandy beaches and up into the lower slopes of the South Downs, so it combines coastal marshes and estuary habitats with rolling chalk countryside.
The district contains a mix of towns and villages, notably the historic market town of Arundel with its Norman castle and cathedral, and the seaside resorts of Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, each with promenades, harbours and seasonal attractions. Nature reserves such as Pagham Harbour attract birdwatchers and walkers, while local festivals and small galleries keep a lively cultural calendar.
Economically, tourism, retail and maritime activities are important, alongside agriculture in the rural hinterland and commuter flows to neighbouring centres. Socially the district is mixed: coastal towns show the typical seasonal economy and pockets of deprivation, whereas some rural and historic areas are relatively affluent, and transport links along the coast and railway make it popular for day visitors and residents alike.
