Satterthwaite is a small rural parish in Westmorland and Furness, tucked into the quieter, wooded low fells of the Lake District National Park and centred on the Rusland Valley. The landscape is a patchwork of drystone walls, streams and small farms, and it sits close to Grizedale Forest and within easy reach of Coniston Water, so it attracts walkers, cyclists and visitors looking for less crowded Lakeland scenery.
The community is modest and long-established, historically part of Furness and the old Lancashire coastal hinterland, with traditional stone cottages and a small parish church. The local economy remains largely agricultural, especially sheep farming, supplemented by tourism, outdoor recreation and a handful of small crafts and businesses drawn to the area's landscape and nearby cultural attractions such as the forest sculpture and trail network.
