Alton is a small rural parish in Wiltshire, England, made up chiefly of the neighbouring villages of Alton Barnes and Alton Priors. It sits on the edge of the Vale of Pewsey close to the downland of Salisbury Plain, so the landscape is dominated by chalk hills, ancient barrows and wide open skies rather than urban development.
The area is best known for its hilltop features such as Milk Hill and the chalk figure of the Alton Barnes White Horse, and its economy remains largely agricultural with a steady trickle of walkers and visitors. Historic churches and a small, tightly knit community give the parish a distinctly local character and a sense of continuity with its prehistoric and medieval past.
