Unitary authority in England

Coordinates:51.33, -1.92
OS grid ref:SU 05 58

The unitary authority of Wiltshire in south‑west England covers a largely rural landscape of rolling chalk downland and river valleys. It contains world‑famous prehistoric sites such as Stonehenge and Avebury on Salisbury Plain, the extensive military training area there, and historic centres like Salisbury with its cathedral that houses one of the surviving original Magna Carta manuscripts.

Today the local economy blends agriculture, defence and high‑value science (notably at Porton Down) with market towns such as Trowbridge, Chippenham and Devizes providing services; tourism to estates and attractions like Longleat is important too. The modern unitary council was established in 2009, and social life tends to combine a strong rural identity with commuters travelling to places such as Bath and London and pockets of innovation in the north of the county.
