Cookham is a compact riverside village and civil parish in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, in the county of Berkshire. It sits on the north bank of the River Thames between Maidenhead and Marlow and is made up of the distinct hamlets of Cookham Rise, Cookham Dean and Cookham Moor. The towpath, lock and nearby meadowland give it a strong sense of place as a Thames-side community, with plenty of walks, river boating and National Trust-style countryside on its doorstep.
Cookham has a lively cultural life for a village of its size and is best known as the home and inspiration of the painter Stanley Spencer, whose work is displayed at the local Stanley Spencer Gallery. The village retains an attractive high street with traditional pubs, independent shops and small businesses, and a railway link via the Marlow branch that makes commuting to London straightforward; that mix of artistic history, pleasant riverside scenery and commuter-friendly connections helps explain its enduring popularity.
