Acaster Malbis is a small village and civil parish a few miles south of York, set beside the meandering River Ouse on the edge of the Ouse valley. Its name hints at history – "Acaster" from the Latin for a camp, suggesting Roman links, and "Malbis" from the Norman family who once held the manor – and the settlement still shows a mix of old stone houses and a parish church that reflect its long past.
Today it has a distinctly rural, village feel: surrounding farmland, riverside walks and plenty of birdlife make it popular with walkers and nature lovers, while many residents commute into York. Local life centres on community events, the village hall and the riverside, and the combination of quiet countryside and easy access to the city gives it a relaxed but connected social character.
