Bishopthorpe is a compact village just south of York, sitting on the east bank of the River Ouse only a few miles from the city centre. Despite its proximity to York it retains a village character, with a conservation area of older cottages, tree‑lined lanes and easy river walks, while being convenient for commuters and visitors alike.
The village is best known for Bishopthorpe Palace, the historic official residence of the Archbishop of York, which gives the place a strong ecclesiastical and historic identity. Locally there’s a lively community life - church activities, sports clubs and village fêtes - while the name also lives on in Bishopthorpe Road in York, a popular shopping street of independent shops and cafés that reflects the area’s more urban cultural connections.
