Copmanthorpe is a suburban village and electoral ward on the south‑western edge of York, sitting roughly four miles from the city centre. It occupies a pleasant position between the floodplain of the River Ouse and the main road corridors around the city, with good road and rail links nearby (the A64 and the East Coast Main Line are both easily reached), which helps explain its popularity with commuters.
Despite modern growth, the area retains a strong village feel: a conservation character in parts, local shops, pubs, a primary school and active sports and social clubs. The name dates back to Norse roots and there are traces of its historical development from a farming settlement to a commuter community; local events and an engaged parish council keep community life lively while most employment is now a mix of local services and people travelling into York and further afield.
