Stranmillis is an inner suburban ward in south Belfast, running along the southern bank of the River Lagan. The area centres on Stranmillis Road and the riverside towpath around Stranmillis Bridge, and sits close to Queen's University, with Stranmillis University College adding a strong educational presence.
It’s a leafy, largely residential neighbourhood of Victorian and Edwardian terraces, popular with students, academics and families, with a lively local scene of independent cafés and shops spilling over from the nearby Malone Road and Lisburn Road. The ward’s name reflects its historic association with mills on the River Lagan; today it combines conservation areas, relatively high property values and an active community that enjoys riverside walks, rowing and local events.
