Edzell is a small conservation village in Angus, Scotland, sitting beside the River North Esk at the entrance to Glen Esk. It is best known for the atmospheric ruins of Edzell Castle and its rare early-17th-century walled garden, with carved stone panels and heraldic emblems that attract visitors and photographers and give the place a strong historic character.
The local economy is largely agricultural with a steady trickle of tourism, and the village retains a close-knit community feel with a village hall, small shops and cafés. The presence of the former signals base at RAF Edzell left a modern imprint on the area in the late 20th century, and services in nearby Brechin and Montrose support residents who enjoy walking, fishing and exploring the Angus glens.
