Montrose is a coastal town in Angus, Scotland, sitting at the mouth of the River South Esk on the North Sea. Its broad bay shelters the Montrose Basin, a tidal lagoon of international importance for migrating waders and wildfowl and managed in part as an RSPB reserve; the town also offers a long sandy beach and a working harbour.
Historically a trading and fishing port, Montrose still has maritime and industrial links through Montrose Port, and it was home to one of Britain’s earliest military airfields, commemorated at the Montrose Air Station Museum. The town is proud of its golfing heritage at Montrose Golf Links and functions as a quiet cultural and service centre between Dundee and Aberdeen, with tourism, local services and some energy-sector support work sustaining the local economy.
