Forfar is the county town of Angus, set on the River Isla with medieval roots as a market centre for the surrounding farmland. It expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries with textile and processing trades and today combines local retail, light industry and public services while still acting as a gateway to the nearby hills and glens.
The town is noted for the recreational Forfar Loch and the locally celebrated Forfar bridie, and it retains a lively community spirit with regular markets and sporting life - the football club plays at Station Park. Close attractions such as Glamis Castle bring visitors, but much of Forfar’s appeal comes from its compact historic streets and agricultural hinterland.
