Stonehaven sits on the sheltered coast of Aberdeenshire in northeast Scotland, where the mouth of the River Carron meets the North Sea. The town’s compact harbour, crescent-shaped bay and surrounding cliffs give dramatic views, with the iconic ruined Dunnottar Castle perched on a headland a short distance out of town.
Traditionally a fishing and shipbuilding community, Stonehaven now mixes local seafood, tourism and commuter links into nearby Aberdeen. It’s known for lively local culture - most famously the Fireballs Ceremony on Hogmanay - small museums such as the Stonehaven Tolbooth Museum, regular events and a friendly high street of pubs and cafes that reflect its maritime heritage.
