The council area of Clackmannanshire sits on the north bank of the River Forth, tucked between Stirling to the west and Fife to the east. It is Scotland’s smallest council area, dominated by the dramatic scarp of the Ochil Hills, with lowland plains running down to the Forth and attractive views across the estuary.
Its towns are compact - the administrative centre is Alloa, with other settlements such as Dollar, Tillicoultry and Alva - and the area has a rich history. Industrial heritage from coal, textiles and brewing survives in landmarks like Alloa Tower and Castle Campbell, while the Ochils and local glens, including Alva Glen and the distinctive hollow known as the Devil's Beeftub, draw walkers and mountain bikers.
Today the economy mixes light manufacturing, services and tourism, with many people commuting to nearby centres for work and Alloa remaining a retail and civic hub. Community life is strong, with local festivals, country shows and conservation groups celebrating both the rural landscapes and built heritage, giving the area a lively local identity despite its small size.
