Ecclefechan is a small village in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, sitting in the rural valley of Annandale close to the main M74 corridor. It has a compact, agricultural character with rolling hills and farmland around it, and historically served as a coaching stop on the route between southern Scotland and Carlisle.
The village is best known as the birthplace of the writer Thomas Carlyle and the small cottage now preserved as his museum draws literary visitors; it also lends its name to the locally famous Ecclefechan tart. Today there’s a quietly close-knit community with farming, small local businesses and some commuters to nearby towns such as Dumfries and Carlisle, while walkers and history fans visit for the landscape and heritage.
