Annan sits at the mouth of the River Annan on the edge of the Solway Firth, in the valley of Annandale within Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It has medieval roots and grew as a small port and industrial town - milling and shipping were important in the 19th century - and today combines local services and light industry with many residents commuting to nearby centres such as Carlisle or Dumfries.
The town retains a lively community feel, with a local museum, riverside walks and access to rich Solway birdlife that attract visitors, and a keen sporting culture centred on its football club, Annan Athletic, who play at Galabank. Period buildings, a compact town centre and surrounding rolling countryside make it a pleasant base for exploring the historic landscapes of south-west Scotland.
