Newmilns is a small town in the steep, wooded Irvine Valley of East Ayrshire, Scotland, lying on the banks of the River Irvine and close to neighbouring villages such as Darvel and Galston. The valley setting gives easy access to rolling hills and countryside walks while placing the town within a distinctive linear streetscape shaped by former mill development.
Historically Newmilns grew up around water‑powered mills and became a notable centre for weaving, lace and hosiery in the 19th and early 20th centuries; remnants of that industrial past still appear in converted mill buildings and local heritage projects. Today it is a largely residential community with small businesses, active local groups preserving textile traditions, and ongoing efforts to balance conservation, modest regeneration and rural living.
