Airdrie is a former industrial market town in North Lanarkshire, about 12 miles east of Glasgow in central Scotland. Its name comes from Gaelic, often interpreted as “high pasture”, and the town grew on the Monkland plain during the 18th and 19th centuries around coal, iron and textile industries, with remnants of Victorian architecture and canal-era features such as the Monkland Canal.
Today Airdrie retains a strong local identity: community groups, sporting ties through the local football club and regular civic events contribute to a lively social scene, while modern retail and housing and ongoing regeneration reflect a shift from heavy industry to services and commuting - rail and road links also make travel to Glasgow and Edinburgh straightforward.
