Coatbridge is a town in North Lanarkshire, in the central belt of Scotland, a few miles east of Glasgow. It occupies a low-lying industrial valley in the old Monklands area beside the Monkland Canal, and historically formed part of the wider River Clyde basin that powered central Scotland’s 19th‑century growth.
Once nicknamed the "Iron Burgh" for its dense concentration of coal mines, ironworks and foundries, Coatbridge has preserved that industrial past at the Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life while evolving into a mix of light industry, retail and commuter housing. The town also has a strong Irish immigrant heritage that shapes local culture and events, and today combines community networks, regeneration projects and decent transport links to Glasgow and nearby Airdrie.
