Hamilton

Hamilton is a large town in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, sitting on the banks of the River Clyde about 12 miles south‑east of Glasgow. Its history was shaped by the Dukes of Hamilton and the former Hamilton Palace; much of the estate survives as the wooded Chatelherault Country Park, and the imposing Hamilton Mausoleum is a local landmark famous for its long echoes.

Once focused on coal, textiles and heavy industry, Hamilton has shifted towards public administration, retail and commuting, serving as the administrative centre for South Lanarkshire. Good rail and road links to Glasgow, a busy town centre and a lively sporting scene - the local professional club Hamilton Academical play at New Douglas Park - give it a mixed urban‑suburban character and an active community life.
